Medical Council issues updated warning against 'botox parties'
The General Medical Council has published updated prescribing guidance, which warns doctors against using Patient Group Directions to prescribe anti-wrinkle treatments such as botox.
The new guidance states that although Patient Group Directions may be suitable for the supply and administration of some injectable medicines, the administration of medicines (such as Botox) to paralyse muscles which cause wrinkles 'requires assessment of individual patients' suitability and (in the event that administration is delegated to a nurse or other person) patient specific directions.'
Jane O'Brien, the GMC's head of standards, said some nurses had been using the orders to inject the treatments at so-called 'botox parties'.
"There have been no problems yet. But essentially botox is botulistic poison," she said.
- Always insist on botox treatment in a clinical environment and ensure it is administered by trained botox professionals.
